Freestyle is a modern self defence based system with all the benefits of Martial Arts. Classes are fun and friendly where members work at their own pace.

Classes cater for all levels of skill and experience – from beginners, intermediates, and advanced with a separate class for Black belts & Dan ranks.

Freestyle Martial Arts

Australian Freestyle Martial Arts (AFMA) is based on principles from Martial Arts worldwide. Boxing, Karate, Muay Thai, Kali and Grappling are blended into one unique, effective self defence based discipline.

Adult classes improve physical and mental health. Personal awareness, resilience, independence, strength, and self-confidence are also developed, with classes held in a fun and challenging environment designed to bring out the best in everyone!

The program was developed by Principal Rick O’Brien (Diploma of Sports Coaching) with over 40 years of professional experience in coaching in workplaces, victims of crime, schools, and security groups throughout Australia.

Progressive learning

Members can earn their White belt within their first few classes. AFMA’s progressive grading syllabus allows members to work their own pace and gain the skills required for each belt, until they ultimately reach Black Belt. Each grading acts as a stepping stone with each level becoming more challenging than the one before. The AFMA belt system cultivates goal-setting, motivation, and confidence.

Proactive respects all arts and support those who venture into ‘new’ territory. We offer RPLs (Recognised Prior Learning) for those coming from different styles to seamlessly transition into AFMA.

Coaching & teaching style

Proactive Instructors are qualified professional & volunteer sports coaches with a minimum Cert III qualification. Instructors are selected based on their skill, passion, friendliness, and ability to communicate.

Proactive instructors break down skills so it’s easy for you to learn. You will be amazed at how quickly & easily you will instinctively & naturally use your new skills.

No previous fitness level is required as training is progressive in nature. As your skills develop, so too will your fitness and conditioning.

Proactive Self Defence Programs

The unfortunate reality is that it is not uncommon for us to find ourselves in potential or real threatening situations. This can be on the streets, public transport, at work, and even within our homes with the rampant increase in home invasions.

The Freestyle syllabus (AFMA) covers extensive practical self defence skills including dealing with violent offenders, multiple opponents, weapons, ground fighting, and other common self defence scenarios.

Proactive also offers extensive programs on assertive violence awareness and prevention that includes topics such as assertive body language, fear management, verbal diffuse of an aggressor, as well as simple effective techniques for a variety of attack and harassment situations.

Self defence education empowers individuals and gives them the essential tools to confidently interact with the many facets of modern society.

Interested in some healthy competition?

Members who enjoy competition can get the opportunity to compete at local, state, national, and even international tournaments through joining the Proactive Team Freestyle or the Proactive Top Team.
